Prayer Flags and Prayer Wheels, What They Actually Mean, Not Just What They Look Like
Prayer flags and prayer wheels are everywhere in Bhutan, and most visitors photograph them without knowing what they actually represent.
What do the different coloured prayer flags mean?
Each flag carries printed prayers and mantras. As wind passes over the fabric, it is believed to carry those blessings out into the surrounding land. The five colours represent sky, air, fire, water, and earth.
Why are flags placed at high passes specifically?
Higher elevations are seen as closer to the sky, and windier locations spread the prayers further, which is why passes like Dochula are covered in flags.
What is the purpose of a prayer wheel?
Each wheel contains rolled paper printed with mantras. Spinning it clockwise is believed to release the same benefit as reciting the prayer aloud.
